It is characterised by the wing cap extending all the way back to the back strap, as opposed to the normal brogue, where it disappears into the welt around the middle of the foot.
Originally, however this upper style was known as the galosh brogue because the wing cap resembles the shape made by a galosh as it sweeps down the side of the foot. The Royal has always been popular in America and had a spell in the 70's as being a serious Northern Soul dance shoe to be worn with Oxford bags.
Crawlin' Kingsnake is made on the TL1 last and has a nice chunky sole with storm welt.
